SHADOWS OF THE MIND

They lurk within the corners
Of the mind during the day;
Yet all the while they long for night
When they can come and play.

To many souls tormented
By the ghosts of their own doom,
There’s nothing quite as terrifying
As a darkened room.

The shadows prowl around us,
Secure in their power.
While we lie awake and sweating
Hour after hour.

No busy life to mask our fears,
Our chores done for the day;
Our wish to gently slumber gone …
Someone’s gonna pay!!!

Oh fickle mind, torment me not
With problems unforeseen.
I have enough to deal with now
So please … don’t be so mean!

I toss and turn, I sigh and curse;
I’m wasting precious time.
The child will be up soon –
Wanting food and spreading grime.

A young, uncluttered mind like his
Means he can sleep all night.
His only foes are monsters ~
Gone when I turn on the light.

He’s running down the hallway now,
I know he’ll head for me!
He hugs me with his little arms…
And all the shadows flee.
